Baptism does not make you "saved".
It is a public declaration that you have made Jesus Lord of your life. When you are placed under water, and raised back out of it, you are symbolically stating that you have died to sin, and that you have been raised to new life in Jesus—just as He died for our sins, was buried and raised to life again.

Baptism identifies you as a follower of Jesus

Jesus himself was baptized. If we are followers of Christ, we will want to follow His example. Jesus' baptism marked a big turning point in His life! Soon after He was baptized, Jesus began performing miracles and teaching with great authority.

Matthew 3:13-17

Once you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, baptism is the next step in your walk as a Christian. In the New Testament, many people were baptized immediately after accepting Christ. "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" Romans 10:9-10
